About the Challenge

What is SeaPerch West Asia?

SeaPerch West Asia is the regional underwater robotics challenge for school students. Teams build a small underwater robot (ROV), test it, and compete at the regional final. Each season has a new theme; see the Challenge Details page.

Who can take part?

School students, mainly 10 to 16 years old, in teams of 2 to 4 students with one coach. Teams come from the UAE, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar and Bahrain, in addition to Jordan and Iraq, and the challenge is open to other countries in the region.

What are the classes?
  • Middle School: all students in grade 8 or below.
  • High School: at least one student in grade 9 or above.
  • Open: any grade, with a modified robot (for example more than $25 of changes, 3D-printed or machined parts, more than 3 thrusters, or speed controls).

The students’ grades decide the class, not their ages. See the full comparison on the Rules and Refund Policy page.

Do we need robotics experience?

No. Every team gets the resources and the kit instructions, and every coach is invited to a free online coach training day. Technical support and mentorship are available on request.

How many teams can one school register?

There is no limit on the number of teams per school or organization.

Registration and Fees

How do we register?
  1. The coach fills in the team and coach details on our website.
  2. The coach pays online by card.
  3. You get a confirmation email.
  4. The coach adds the students’ details in the dashboard within 7 days.
How much does it cost?

The fees for this season are on the Challenge Details page.

Schools with 5 teams or more can choose the School Package: 5 teams with kits and a 1-day hands-on workshop at your school.

Are there any discounts?

Yes. Watch our offer codes during the season.

  • Government schools get a discount automatically.
  • There are offers for schools with 3 teams or more, and for schools that took part last season.

Each team can use one discount only, and the bigger one applies. The discount shows at checkout. The School Package price is final.

Can we pay by bank transfer?

Yes. Email info@seaperchwestasia.org before you register and we will send an invoice, payable within 14 days. Your team is confirmed when payment is received.

When does registration close?

See the dates on the Challenge Details page.

What is the refund policy?

See the Rules and Refund Policy page. This season’s refund dates are on the Challenge Details page.

Kit and Shipping

Do we have to buy the kit from you?

No. You can register only and use your own SeaPerch kit, as long as the robot follows the class rules.

How much is shipping?

Free inside the UAE. For shipping outside the UAE, see the Challenge Details page. If shipping to your country costs more, our team will contact you before sending the kit.

When will we get the kit?

After payment, our team contacts you to arrange delivery. Register early so your team has more time to build and test.

Do we need tools beyond the kit?

Yes. Teams need basic tools such as a soldering iron, wire cutters and a multimeter. Most schools and training centers already have them.

Support and Training

What support do teams get?
  • An online orientation and a free online coach training day (dates on the Challenge Details page).
  • The team handbook and resources on our website.
  • Technical support and mentorship on request through our support form.
Do you offer training workshops?

Yes, training workshops for students or coaches are available on request. Contact us for details.

How do we ask for help?

Fill in the support form or email info@seaperchwestasia.org.

The Competition

What do teams do in the season?

Teams build and test their robot and prepare:

  • a Technical Design Report,
  • a System Overview Sheet, and
  • a Technical Design Display (poster).

They can also do an optional Engineering in Action community project. At the regional final they run two pool courses and give a Technical Interview Presentation (required for all classes).

When are the submissions due?

All submissions are due on the same date. See the Challenge Details page.

When and where is the regional final?

See the Challenge Details page.

Who pays travel and hotel for the regional final?

Each team covers its own travel and hotel costs.

Can our report, poster and interview be in Arabic?

Yes. At the regional final, teams can use Arabic or English. Teams that qualify for the International will need English, so we encourage them to prepare in English too.

Can teams go to the International SeaPerch Challenge?

Top teams can qualify for the International SeaPerch Challenge in the USA. RoboNation sets the number of places. We help qualified teams register and prepare. Dates are on the Challenge Details page.

Data and Photos

How do you use our data and photos?

Team data is used only to run SeaPerch West Asia. At registration, the coach confirms parents’ consent and agrees that photos and videos of the team can be used for news and social media.
